Parton evolution in the fixed flavor factorization scheme
نویسنده
چکیده
It is argued that while the scale dependence of the parton distributions in the fixed flavor factorization scheme is governed by three active flavors, the scale dependence of the running coupling should nevertheless be better governed by a variable number of active flavors. The fixed flavor factorization schme (FFS) is characterized by considering the heavy quarks (h = c, b, t) always as external particles which are not included among the partons in the colorless hadrons. Their participation in deep inelastic scattering processes like, say, eN → eX is considered to be due to production subprocesses such as γ∗g → hh̄ rather than γ∗h → h. The latter subprocess becomes relevant in the so called variable flavor factorization scheme where, besides the light u, d, s quarks, the heavy quarks are also considered to form an intrinsic part of colorless hadrons. Considering both subprocesses together would amount to double counting and thus the FFS dictates setting the number of flavors nf = 3 in the flavor–singlet QCD evolution equations d d lnQ2 ~q (x,Q) = αs(Q ) 2π ∫ 1

On the role of heavy flavor parton distributions at high energy colliders
We compare ‘fixed flavor number scheme’ (FFNS) and ‘variable flavor number scheme’ (VFNS) parton model predictions at high energy colliders. Based on our recent LO– and NLO–FFNS dynamical parton distributions, we generate radiatively two sets of VFNS parton distributions where also the heavy quark flavors h = c, b, t are considered as massless partons within the nucleon. By studying the role of...
متن کاملThe 3-, 4-, and 5-flavor NNLO Parton Distributions Functions from Deep-Inelastic-Scattering Data and at Hadron Colliders
We determine the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCDanalysis of the inclusive neutral-current deep-inelastic-scattering (DIS) world data combined with the neutrino-nucleon DIS di-muon data and the fixed-target Drell-Yan data. The PDF-evolution is performed in the N f = 3 fixed-flavor scheme and supplementary sets of PDFs in the 4and 5-flavor scheme...
متن کاملVariable Flavor Number Parton Distributions and Weak Gauge and Higgs Boson Production at Hadron Colliders at NNLO of QCD
Based on our recent NNLO dynamical parton distributions as obtained in the ‘fixed flavor number scheme’, we generate radiatively parton distributions in the ‘variable flavor number scheme’ where also the heavy quark flavors (c, b, t) become massless partons within the nucleon. Only within this latter factorization scheme NNLO calculations are feasible at present, since the required partonic sub...

In Phys. Rev. D 58, 014014 (1998) and 71, 094013 (2005), we determined non-perturbative D, D, D, D s , and Λ + c fragmentation functions, both at leading and next-to-leading order in the MS factorization scheme, by fitting ee data taken by the OPAL Collaboration at CERN LEP1. The starting points for the evolution in the factorization scale μ were taken to be μ0 = 2mQ, where Q = c, b. For the re...
متن کاملHeavy Quark Parton Distributions: Mass-Dependent or Mass-Independent Evolution?
In a consistently formulated pQCD framework incorporating nonzero mass heavy quark partons, there is still the freedom to define parton distributions obeying either mass-independent or mass-dependent evolution equations, contrary to statements made in a recent paper by MRRS. With properly matched hard cross-sections, different choices merely correspond to different factorization schemes, and th...
